Morgan Goes Green

Today, many businesses are all participating in green projects. From changing truck fleets to hybrid vehicles to zero plastic bottles going to landfills campaigns, big business is making it their business to help preserve the environment.

This year, D.W. Morgan was recently recognized for its green efforts in Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s 2009 Green Supply Chain Award issue. SDCE strives to honor companies each year that demonstrate policies and initiatives that contribute to the health of the environment in our daily operations.

With the rollout of our iPhone-based mobile communications system, Morgan operates more efficiently and eliminates roughly 50,000 paper way bills annually. This removes 150,000 pieces of paper-a stack as tall as a five-story building-from consumption cycle each year.

Morgan analyzes the movement of goods to identify efficiencies in terms of shipment consolidation, route traveled, mode of transportation and the elimination of unnecessary moves. By completely redesigning supply chains, Morgan saves not just money but also carbon.

For example, Mattson Technologies had been flying large electronic components one at time from Shanghai, China, to Fremont, Calif. Morgan devised a plan that allowed the company to consolidate the shipments and transport four at time in a container by ocean, increasing transportation efficiencies and reducing fuel consumption. In addition, Cisco Systems has recognized Morgan for its transportation efficiencies and cost reductions, citing a 10 percent transportation cost reduction over previous carriers through a more efficient supply chain, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint.

As we continuously strive for Operational Excellence and Efficiencies, it is encouraging that these activities also contribute greatly to a healthier earth.
